The St Benedict Medal is a sacred religious object used in the Catholic Church and holds significant spiritual meaning for Catholics and Christians.
Front side
Image of St Benedict: The central image on the front of the medal features a depiction of St Benedict, a Christian saint who lived in the 6th century. He is often portrayed holding a cross or a book, representing his dedication to the Christian faith and monastic life.
Latin inscription: Around the image of St Benedict is the inscription "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur", which translates to "May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death". This signifies the medal's role as a source of protection, especially in times of spiritual need and during one's passing from this life.
Back side
Cross: The back of the medal features a cross, one of the central symbols of Christianity, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Initials and inscriptions: Surrounding the cross are several initials and inscriptions in Latin. These stand for prayers and phrases meant to invoke God's protection and blessings, including:
- "C.S.P.B.": "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" or "The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict."
- "C.S.S.M.L.": "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" or "May the Holy Cross be my light."
- "N.D.S.M.D.": "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux" or "Let not the dragon be my guide."
- "V.R.S.": "Vade Retro Satana" or "Begone, Satan!"
- "N.S.M.V.": "Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana" or "Never tempt me with your vanities."
- "S.M.Q.L.": "Sunt Mala Quae Libas" or "What you offer is evil."
The St Benedict Medal is often worn as a pendant or carried as a sacramental for protection against evil, temptation and spiritual dangers. It is also used in various Catholic rituals and blessings. The prayers and inscriptions on the medal are believed to invoke the intercession of St Benedict and God's divine protection, and it remains a cherished symbol of faith and devotion for many Catholics.
