17mm 9KT Yellow Gold St Benedict Medal Pendant
The St Benedict medal (chain not included) is a sacred religious object used in the Catholic Church and holds significant spiritual meaning for Catholics and Christians.
Front side
The central image is a depiction of St Benedict, a Christian saint who lived in the 6th century. He is often shown holding a cross or a book, representing his dedication to the Christian faith and monastic life.
Around the image runs the Latin inscription "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur", which translates to "May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death". This marks the medal's role as a source of protection, especially in times of spiritual need and at one's passing from this life.
Back side
The back features a cross, one of the central symbols of Christianity, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Surrounding the cross are initials and inscriptions in Latin standing for prayers meant to invoke God's protection and blessings:
- C.S.P.B. "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti", the Cross of the Holy Father Benedict.
- C.S.S.M.L. "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux", may the Holy Cross be my light.
- N.D.S.M.D. "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux", let not the dragon be my guide.
- V.R.S. "Vade Retro Satana", begone, Satan.
- N.S.M.V. "Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana", never tempt me with your vanities.
- S.M.Q.L. "Sunt Mala Quae Libas", what you offer is evil.
The medal is often worn as a pendant or carried as a sacramental for protection against evil, temptation and spiritual dangers, and it is also used in various Catholic rituals and blessings. The prayers and inscriptions are believed to invoke the intercession of St Benedict and God's divine protection, and it remains a cherished symbol of faith and devotion for many Catholics.
