30 Years Jewellery Experience
A St Lourdes medal is usually an Our Lady of Lourdes medal. Lourdes is associated with the Virgin Mary's apparitions to St Bernadette in 1858 rather than with a saint of that name.
Medals of this kind show the Blessed Virgin Mary standing in a grotto, sometimes with a rosary, and St Bernadette kneeling before her. Other common elements are the Grotto of Massabielle, where the apparitions took place, the miraculous spring that symbolises healing, and inscriptions such as "Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us" or simply "Lourdes".
The medal stands for faith, healing and hope. Many people wear it to seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially for healing from illness.
