The St Benedict Cross usually refers to a crucifix or cross incorporating the Medal of St Benedict. In Catholic tradition, it is associated with faith in Christ, resistance to evil and temptation, prayer for protection, and St Benedict’s spiritual rule of life.
The letters on the medal have specific meanings:
-
C S S M L — Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux = May the Holy Cross be my light
-
N D S M D — Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux = Let not the dragon be my guide
-
V R S N S M V — Vade Retro Satana, Numquam Suade Mihi Vana = Begone Satan; never tempt me with your vanities
-
S M Q L I V B — Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas = What you offer me is evil; drink the poison yourself
-
C S P B — Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti = Cross of our Holy Father Benedict
-
PAX = Peace
The cross itself represents Christ and salvation, while the St Benedict medal emphasizes prayer against temptation and evil and trust in God.
It is regarded as a sacramental, not a magical charm—the meaning comes from the Christian faith and prayers associated with it.
